Research Pathway
My name is Meghan Root and I am a senior majoring in biology at the University of South Carolina. In May 2017, I will be graduating with a Bachelors of Science degree in Biology. ​Throughout my time here at USC, I have taken many different courses that have challenged me to think outside the box and self-reflect. Due to those courses, I decided to pursue graduation with leadership distinction through the Research Pathway.

I always knew that I wanted to pursue a career in healthcare, but as a freshman in college I did not know which route I wanted to go. Throughout my time in school, I have discovered more about myself and I was able to drill down what I wanted to focus on. My volunteer and shadowing experience, research experience and study abroad experience all led me to decide that I wanted to go to Physician Assistant school following graduation.
Following my decision to pursue my masters in Physician Assistant studies, that prompted me to get more involved in the healthcare field. In August 2016, I became a certified nursing assistant to ensure that I really wanted to work with patients and work within the healthcare field. Upon graduation and applying to PA school, I hope my experience as a certified nursing assistant will give me a leg up in the application process and help me achieve my career goals of becoming a certified PA.

I am hoping that through reading my key insights in my e-portfolio, you will be able to take a glimpse at some of the overarching ideals and concepts I have learned throughout my time as a biology student at USC. The project explained in my leadership section is an example of how I can apply what I have learned and experienced throughout my educational career and hopefully have a positive impact on healthcare. My education and experiences have helped me grow and evolve and be able to leave USC as a better person than I was when I got here.
